A re-elected Andrews Labor Government will redevelop and expand the Maroondah Hospital at Ringwood, and re-name it in honour of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, as a mark of respect to her unwavering commitment to healthcare and our community.
The Queen was a longstanding supporter of Victoria’s healthcare system. As the patron of the Royal Melbourne and the Royal Children’s hospitals, she demonstrated her devotion to patients and their care whenever she visited their bedsides.
The new Queen Elizabeth II Hospital will rebuild and refurbish the Maroondah Hospital from the ground up.
A re-elected Labor Government will invest between $850-$1,050 million in the new hospital, which will include a new emergency department (ED), operating theatres, day procedure facilities and specialist care spaces. It will also feature an expanded medical imaging unit and two six-story in-patient towers, housing more than 200 extra beds.
The new ED will have an extra 14 treatment spaces – so more patients can be seen, faster. But it’s not just about capacity. The new ED will deliver more modern and comfortable spaces for patients and staff.
A trip to the ED can be scary for kids – and extremely stressful for parents. That’s why the new ED will have dedicated waiting and treatment areas for families.
There will also be a new mental health hub to provide dedicated support and treatment to people experiencing psychological distress – with quieter, more secluded spaces.
The hospital currently treats 43,000 inpatients every year and 48,000 emergency cases – and demand is increasing as the population in our eastern suburbs grows.
The Queen Elizabeth II Hospital will be able to treat an extra 9,000 in-patients including 22,400 emergency presentations. It will provide for future population growth.
Construction is expected to start in 2025, and around 2,500 jobs will be created during construction alone. Labor’s investments in Free TAFE now will ensure we have the construction workers we need for this project, as well as others into the future.
Labor has invested more than $12 billion in health infrastructure, building the hospitals Victorians need. But world-class healthcare is about more than bricks and mortar – so we’re doing what matters by investing in our healthcare workforce, too.
We’re delivering a $270 million healthcare workforce package to deliver free degrees, training and upskilling for the next generation of nurses and midwives.
The new Queen Elizabeth II Hospital will open in stages from 2029 – employing the nurses and midwives who enroll in our free diplomas and bachelor’s degrees in nursing and midwifery.
Since coming to government, we’ve recruited 22,000 extra healthcare workers. Together with our Pandemic Repair Plan announced earlier this year, we’re training and recruiting 24,000 healthcare workers to provide the care Victorian patients need.
We’ve also invested more than $8 billion in our ambulance service, and hired almost 2,200 paramedics.
