Minister for Local Government and Suburban Development, Shaun Leane, has announced $12 million over two years for suburban revitalisation across six activity centres in Metropolitan Melbourne – Boronia, Noble Park, Lilydale, Tarneit, Melton and Reservoir.
This investment builds on an initial commitment of $3 million across these six sites from the State’s Building Works Stimulus Package, announced in May 2020. The investment will support infrastructure upgrades and maintenance, public-space improvements, place activation, business stimulus and community activities.
Revitalisation works in Boronia will kick off with a streetscape improvement, art and public lighting project in Lupton Way. The Victorian Government is providing $250,000 to this important project. Knox City Council will be making an investment of $350,000.
A local Revitalisation Board for Boronia will be led by Member for Bayswater, Jackson Taylor, and will work to provide advice to the Victorian Government on ways to renew Boronia. The Victorian Government is currently preparing to appoint key local stakeholders, including representatives of Knox City Council, to the Board.
The Board will support the development and delivery of projects that will help reactivate local businesses, encourage participation in community service and cultural activities and drive opportunities for jobs and skills development, accelerating recovery from the impacts of coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
Knox City Council will also help support the delivery of projects, including advice through its Boronia Renewal Strategy, which was developed by the Council last year.
The Victorian Government is committed to encouraging suburban revitalisation as a way of addressing growth pressures, strengthening Melbourne’s liveability, and driving economic opportunity and jobs growth closer to where people live.
The Suburban Revitalisation team works with regional and local stakeholders to help plan and deliver economic, infrastructure, community development and place-making initiatives that support coordinated revitalisation of key activity centres across Melbourne’s established suburbs.
