The Andrews Labor Government is getting on with delivering a major expansion of the Angliss Hospital in Upper Ferntree Gully, with the design phase for the massive project now underway.

Minister for Health Martin Foley today announced architectural firm Silver Thomas Hanley has been appointed to design the $112 million expansion, which includes a new multi-storey building.

Operated by Eastern Health, the state-of-the-art project will deliver a new 32-bed inpatient unit, four operating theatres, a new central sterile supply department and spaces for outpatient services.

The expansion will significantly increase surgery capacity and capabilities at the hospital, meaning less time on waiting lists and better access to world-class healthcare and facilities for families in Knox and the Yarra Ranges.

With the region served by Eastern Health projected to grow to more than 1.1 million people by 2036, including one in five aged 65 years or older, increased capacity at the Angliss Hospital will ensure that it’s able to meet both current and future demand.

At the peak of construction, the project is expected to create and sustain around 330 construction jobs, providing a major boost to the local economy.

Delivered by the Victorian Health Building Authority (VHBA) in partnership with Eastern Health, site preparation works are scheduled to start in late 2022, with construction on the new multi-storey building expected to start in late 2023.

The expansion builds on previous Labor Government investments at the Angliss Hospital, including $20 million in 2018 to build a new 14-bed Intensive Care Unit and refurbish the adult short stay unit and paediatric emergency area.

The Labor Government has invested more than $158 billion in Victoria’s health system since coming into office – ensuring all Victorians have access to the care, treatment and support they need to stay happy, healthy and well.

"The healthcare workers and each and every staff member at the Angliss are incredible people and I am so grateful for their work as are a grateful community."

"This investment will see more beds, more elective surgery suites and better facilities for world class care and the facilities locals deserve. I’m also excited that this will create lots of construction jobs and builds on our previous investment to upgrade facilities here completed in 2018."
