Pedestrians in The Basin are set to benefit from safety improvements around the suburb’s bustling shopping strip, including safer speeds and new electronic speed limit signs.

Sections of Mountain Highway, Forest Road, and Basin-Olinda Road will welcome a new, safer 40km/h speed limit between 8:00am and 6:00pm each day, with 11 permanent electronic speed limit signs to alert drivers.

Students, parents and visitors at St Bernadette’s Catholic Primary School on the Mountain Highway will have safer access to school grounds, thanks to a nearby speed change that will create a broader 40km/h zone during school hours.

Electronic speed limit signs make drivers more aware of speed changes at the busiest times of the day, providing greater visibility with flashing signage, creating a safer environment for pedestrians along these busy shopping strips.

Pedestrians are some of our most vulnerable road users, with almost 80 per cent of pedestrian fatality and serious injury crashes on our roads occurring in areas with speed limits of 60km/h or lower.

This critical upgrade is part of the Victorian and Australian governments’ $457.57 million Road Safety Program, delivering safer, connected journeys in Victoria, while supporting our economic recovery.
